Environment Build Plans

What a build plan needs to define so an environment can be reliably provisioned, not just eventually provisioned.

An environment build plan documents the steps required to bring an environment from nothing to a usable state — ideally as executable infrastructure-as-code, but at minimum as a clear, repeatable runbook.

What a build plan should cover

The value of a documented build plan is most visible when something goes wrong — a corrupted environment, an unplanned rebuild — and the difference between a same-day recovery and a multi-day one usually comes down to whether the build plan actually existed and was current.
