Environment cost rarely grows through a single large decision; it accumulates through many small ones — an environment provisioned and never decommissioned, a Pre-Prod instance sized for peak load and left running continuously, a data refresh process that duplicates storage unnecessarily.
Common sources of avoidable cost
- Environments running outside working hours with no active use.
- Environments provisioned for a specific project and never retired once it completed.
- Over-specified infrastructure, sized for worst-case load rather than actual testing need.
- Duplicated or excessive data storage across environments that don’t need full production-scale volumes.
Most of these are addressed by routine governance rather than new tooling: scheduled shutdowns, a regular decommissioning review, and periodically checking environment sizing against actual usage. The discipline required is closer to housekeeping than engineering, which is precisely why it is easy to neglect.
